3rd Grade Learns About Newspaper

Third grade students from East Elementary had the opportunity to learn about newspapers from Uintah Basin Standard editor, Geoff Liesik. On October 21 Liesik visited 3rd grade classrooms to teach about newspaper reporting. He taught how to interview and ask good questions. He showed his reporter’s tools a reporter notebook, camera, and recorders. He taught how people pay the newspaper to put their advertisement in the paper. This is how the newspaper makes money. Liesik said, “I like the fact that every day is different.” He likes interviewing people and going places to report the news.

On October 28, students went to the Uintah Basin Standard to learn about newspaper printing in the past and present. First students learned how they did it in the old days. It took a whole day to get the letters on the page and print it. It was a slow process. Today, it is faster. Articles are typed on the computer. Computers make the picture small or huge. The size and type of font can easily be changed. After the paper is ready, it goes to the huge printing machine. Students were able to see the big rolls of paper and the presses rolling fast. The paper is printed using magenta, cyan, yellow, and black ink. When it is done printing, the paper goes to Vernal, Jubilee, Stewarts, and other places to be sold. “My favorite part was watching the press go really fast’ said Weston Walker.

Our coal garden changed colors. It is cool. The first time we did it we put cotton, tissue, toothpicks and food coloring and magic sauce and it kept changing colors.

We made a coal garden. We put coal, cotton, tissue paper, magic sauce, food coloring (red, blue, pink, green, and orange). It changed a lot while we ate lunch. The coal garden is fun to look at.

The coal garden has a lot of stuff in the holder. The colors in it are blue, black, green, and really light yellow, pink and white. There is food coloring inside. There are flags inside too. It has coals inside it. It is crowded in the middle. There is cotton and tissue.

My seeds are filthy, but I like my greenhouse. It is cool. My seeds grow 3 inches. I want to grow beets.

The greenhouse was cool to watch grow. My own greenhouse had a 3 inch plant. I was amazed to see the ‘no light’ grow! I thought the seeds might just bundle up. It was fun having a greenhouse.

The greenhouse is growing. The ‘no light’ is growing a lot. The ‘no cotton’ is growing well. The ‘no water’ is not growing at all. I like looking at the greenhouses. They are fun to look at.

My personal greenhouse has some pretty long stems. The roots are all messy inside. There are about ten leaves inside it. My greenhouse is growing really well.
